Ask About the Root Flare Before Buying a Tree

Ask About the Root Flare Before Buying a Tree

A nursery label can identify a tree without answering whether it suits the place you have prepared for it. Bring a photograph and basic description of the proposed site, then ask about the tree’s root condition and planting requirements before arranging delivery.

The Royal Horticultural Society’s planting guidance explains the importance of correct depth and the root flare. Use it to frame questions for your nursery or landscape professional; species and site conditions still need their own assessment.

Discuss the tree and the site together

Ask where the root flare is, how the container or root ball should be handled, and what the installer will check before deciding the final planting depth. Describe drainage concerns, nearby structures and available space honestly. Do not assume that a small container means a tree will remain small.

Record the exact species and cultivar on the quote, along with delivery, planting and follow-up responsibilities. If the proposed location is uncertain, resolve it before selecting a substitute merely because it is in stock.

Agree on the handoff

Ask for written establishment-care instructions appropriate to the selected tree and site. Identify who will inspect an early concern and how you should document it. A clear handoff makes it easier to distinguish a maintenance question from an installation question without guessing after the tree is already in the ground.
